Gebert Contemporary is delighted to announce the exhibition of Las Rocas by Woods Davy. Las Rocas will include approximately 8 works of sculpture: 4 from the well-known Cantamar series and 4 from Davy’s recent series, Boulders. The Cantamar works feature gently rounded stones cantilevered in graceful suspension. These stones, found in the ocean off of the Mexican coast, vary in color and size. They rest on a granite base that rises off the floor and from this base the stones delicately extend into space. If the Cantamar series is about graceful extension, then surely sculpture from the Boulder series forces the viewer to grapple with definitions of physical and psychological monumentality. Boulders grow out of the floor—rough and dark in color, they appear to have pushed their way through the surface of the earth in some primordial burst. They rise and bend as though in response to an unspoken yearning. Boulders both repel and attract: they are weighty and immense, yet alluring and mysterious. The two series are masterfully complementary.
