Reception for the Artist: Friday, May 23, 2008, 5 to 7pm

Gebert Contemporary is delighted to announce its inaugural solo exhibition of the work of Bernd Haussmann. His seductive use of oil and mixed media on aluminum or wood is intoxicating and impressionistic. Haussmann describes his work as rooted in truth and authenticity. He is fond of using musical terms to describe his paintings and says that he hopes the viewer can recognize a personal landscape in his expressionistic abstractions. Haussmann is currently at work on Umwelt, a multi-media project expected to tour several museums across the United States. Umwelt is the compilation of work from the past five years: painting, video, and sound. Haussmann grapples with the concept of nature and the individual’s subjective universe. Through Haussmann’s use of abstraction to express his own universe and identity, he aspires to awaken in the viewer a sense of their own Umwelt.

Bernd Haussmann was born in Tubingen, Germany in 1957. He studied in Stuttgart and moved to the United States in 1990. Paintings by Haussmann are in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Museum der Stadt Reutlingen, Reutlingen, Germany.
