Gebert Contemporary is delighted to announce the new season’s opening exhibition Tideline, new paintings by Vera Sprunt. In Sprunt’s search to express “the eternal fragility of light”, the artist uses a cross between works on paper and hybrid photography to create layers of materials and layers of meaning. Sprunt uses water, sound, and light as inspiration for her most recent images, which include camouflaged tropical and desert flowers, as well as flickering, sparkling pools of water. In this solace of water, Sprunt discovers images that are soft and grainy as well as crystal clear. Using photography as the base from which she builds the work, Sprunt’s paintings are composed of film, Mylar, and acrylic gouache. All of the paintings are unique – one of a kind. While the painting begins with a photographic collage, all color in the work is hand-painted; there is no color photography in the work. These paintings are visually intriguing and emotionally rich and unique on all levels.
Vera Sprunt’s work has been exhibited at the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, North Carolina, as well as in many gallery and university exhibitions throughout the United States.
